Rumor has it that an old friend is planning a press conference in Grand Rapids today, where he will brandish (cue the “Jaws” music)… “Chinese-made products!”
Look, we’re in no position to tell reporters how to do their jobs. But having watched this same guy pull up to our headquarters a while back for another one of these tiresome, news-free stunts… well, we can suggest that you keep a lid on your expectations. There’s a big difference between blowing smoke and a smoking gun.
Fact: What we manufacture in China, we sell in China. Not here. End of story. But when your host tries to twist and turn and torture the language into some other story entirely — well, feel free to ask him any of these questions:
- It’s been a settled issue for nearly a year now: not one product made at Amway’s plant in China is imported back to the US. for sale. Are you planning to show products manufactured in Amway’s China plant that have been imported back to the US?
- If not, why are you wasting our time?
- Are any of the products you are waving around more than four years old? Because that’s how long it’s been since Dick DeVos worked here.
- If not, why are you wasting our time?
- Why do you continue to insist on attacking a Michigan employer that provides jobs for more than 4,000 people here in Michigan?
- Do you plan to hold press conferences attacking each and every Michigan company that owns anything made overseas? If not, why not? And if so, do you expect reporters to attend all 19,563 press conferences?
- Regarding your constant, xenophobic attacks against a Michigan company that does worldwide business — what message do you think those attacks send to global businesses that are thinking about investing here?
- And while we’re on the subject, how about Chinese food? Is it okay for Michigan companies to order in Chinese food?
… and so on. You get the drift. Problem is, we’re pretty sure your host today doesn’t.
