Underlining

This morning’s Detroit News carries the second part of a profile of our former president, Dick DeVos, who is running for governor in Michigan. Today’s piece focuses on our company, and Dick’s time here.

We read this morning’s article, just like you did, and just want to underline a few things:

No, we are not a pyramid scheme. The article points out how that specious claim has been put to rest for decades.

No, we are not a cult. Please.

No, we did not eliminate jobs in Michigan in order to create jobs in China. Nor do we hide behind overseas tax shelters. Quite frankly, we are proud of our global expansion and continue to prosper here at home. See several of our previous posts for elaboration.

And no, we are not perfect. We have millions of independent business owners around the world marketing our products. These entrepreneurs share the same ups and downs of the business world as does anybody else. We help them establish their businesses, and many choose to help themselves. We have rules and we enforce them. Some of them make mistakes, and so do we. But as a whole, day after day, we try and make the business work better. That’s how we’ve managed to grow for nearly 50 years.

(Oh, and one other thing: the News‘ charts rolled together two kinds of sales figures: “estimated retail” and “actual sales.” They are two very different numbers, and thus hard to put into a single chart. We can explain further if needed.)

Thanks.
