Today’s Detroit News carries a letter making several bold assertions about our company, jobs and China.
It’s an odd feeling, having others who don’t know our company make claims about us in the course of the Michigan governor’s race. Opinions are one thing, and everyone’s entitled to them. But we do not intend to sign over ownership of the facts.
Here are the numbers: An investment of $220 million in China (an investment required by the Chinese government as a prerequisite of selling our products there). Over time, this investment has grown into about 4,300 employees in China: including manufacturing jobs, office jobs, and retail clerk jobs, staffing the counters at more than 170 shops. These Chinese employees support the sales of Alticor products to Chinese consumers, a market of some 1.3 billion people.
That’s right, Alticor’s products made in China are sold to Chinese consumers - they are not shipped back to the U.S. for sale. And strong sales of products in China have helped the company continue to invest in its business in Michigan. Last year alone, Alticor’s operations exported a whopping $450 million of US-made products to be sold in more than 80 countries and territories around the world.
Hundreds of staff at the company’s West Michigan facilities – R & D, marketing, legal, finance and many other functions – work on China-related business matters, supporting Amway China – just as our Michigan workforce supports 56 other Amway affiliate businesses around the world.
A thriving American business in China, indeed globally, helping strengthen the jobs and future work of some 4,000 Michigan employees. We’re an American exporting success story and proud of it. These aren’t opinions – these are facts.
