The Dick DeVos for Governor campaign is running a TV commercial in Michigan that features several Alticor employees offering testimonials about Dick’s leadership when he was president of the company.
Some people are trying to make an issue of that. Here’s where we stand:
Yes, the people in the ad work here. They volunteered to be interviewed for the commercial. Their opinions are their own, and they have every right to express them.
In fact, when the Dick DeVos campaign first approached the company about filming on our campus, we made a couple things clear: Only volunteers would participate. On their own time. The company would not incur any expenses. And any employee who didn’t want to take part in the filming, even didn’t want to be “in the shot” in the background—did not have to.
So some employees took a pass.
And others volunteered. Not only did they want to be “in the shot,” they had something to say. They appreciate what Dick DeVos did for them, and for the company, when he was president here. And they said so.
Now, seriously: is anyone really surprised by that?
We’ve told some of you personally: we understand that Alticor is going to be a subject in this campaign. We’re a big part of Dick DeVos’ biography, and it will be hard to write about him without including us.
But we don’t have signs on the lawn, banners in the halls, or really, very much conversation about politics at all. Nobody’s getting buttonholed, and nobody’s going to be. Our employees’ opinions are their own, pro or con. The only thing we have asked every employee to focus on is that, no matter what the distractions are in 2006—we have a business to run.
